These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. Initially, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed third-level names remained operational.
